So Little So Much
So far, this is probably my preferred example of what could often be used as the official usability motto: so little, so much.
This is your run-of-the-mill ice-cream freezer stand, the one with the long glass window and plenty of ice-cream flavours behind to choose from.
Just take a look at what stands on the floor, directly in front of it: if you can't figure it out, let me explain that this is a small podium much like those used say for the Olympics or any sports event.
The three steps have different heights, and this is all. It's quite low technology, low investments, no necessity to involve human intervention.
Nonetheless, it's a really successful example of problem solving: kids love ice-creams, but kids are small, they come in different sizes and they obviously want to take a look at the colourful ice-creams before making up their minds on such delicate matters of flavours.
If you have this, kids are free to come and look as they please, no parents or grown-ups required to (first resist and then) haul them up.
This one was spotted in a large mall, but at least here in Sweden these little viewing-aids appear to be quite common. I have to ask around if they have a proper Swedish name, you never know.
I can't remember ever seeing one in Italy, not even when I was a child and perhaps more interested in ice-creams. Now this could be a good idea to import.
